So I spent some time this weekend working on a few things that will be a real hoot to post and a few others of self indulgence like hanging out with some buddies watching the UFC 106 on Saturday night with Matt Serra, former UFC Welterweight Champion.  Then on Sunday I spent time with my family ate some cake and went treated myself to a pretty cool test drive of a car way out of my price range, but hey I wanted to set the bar pretty high.  Apparently I did as the guy in the seat who was there to keep me honest said he grabbed the “oh S*%!” handles hitting some fast and hard corners.  All I can say is WOW!

Crazy workouts

So before we get into this one, I have a question for you.

What’s the craziest workout or single exercise you have ever done?

Yeah I know we are the nutrition guys, but if your nutrition isn’t in order there is no way your training will get even a fraction of the results you are hoping for.

Alright here’s the nutrition for today.

It is plain, simple and blunt.  Do NOT drink your calories away.  That’s right, eat, eat and eat. That’s not hard for most of us, but NOT drinking calories is a tougher thing to do.

BTW this Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks could have 410 calories (I bolded the stats that you want to pay attention to).

Think about it.  If you eat sugar it takes a little bit of digestion and hit your blood stream to spike insulin.  Now compare that to liquid sugar, next to no digestion to buffer the rate at which the sugar hits your blood stream and spikes that fat storing insulin.  Not to mention a liquid sugar will deliver almost 100% of the calories to your bloodstream while a solid food, even as simple as white sugar will be reduced just a little bit by the calories it took to process the sugar to pass into the blood stream.

OK so some of the technicalities out of the way.  Think about this.  The stomach can only hold about 120 ounces of solids at anytime to be “full” and satisfied.  The rate is the same for liquids, but the perception of full or satisfied is much less with liquids than it is with solids.  Even crazier is that you can pack in almost 10x the calories in liquid form than you can with solids.

So now you know why I suggest for an instant reduction in fat storage and personal satisfaction to EAT your calories.

This is especially true as we rock our way into the next of the triple threat holiday feasts: Thanksgiving.

Eat STOP Eat

OK so this is something odd and exciting.  Often you think of Empowered Nutrition as full on eating for maximal benefits.  Well my good friend Brad Pilon and I have had conversations over the last few years and to be honest, he has won me over with his Eat STOP Eat theory (I always liked it, but liked to challenge it just for kicks).

Before you tie me to a stake and light the torches, There are 2 things I want to say:

  1. First, I have to remind you that it is in the best interests of all of us that I submit myself to continuous research and open minded discussions.
  2. Two, the STOP part is just ONE of 3 or maybe 7 parts (days) if you will and is easily applied to the Empowered Nutrition Programs.  In fact, Brad is often asked what to Eat on the Eat days.  My answer is Empowered.  Its the STOP that confuses people, the eat part is all taken care of and both programs are very powerful, even synergistic in effects and results.eat-stop-eat-book

OK so if you are confused about the STOP part, you need to read Brad’s book.  Make that books.  Start with the main guts and check out some more info on Eat STOP Eat, then you will honestly love this guys honest and ethical approach, back by research and science and want to know and follow more of his stuff.  Its simply amazing what Brad knows.

The STOP is so beneficial in so many different ways, far too many to list here, but let me tell you this;  Adding a STOP day to your Empowered days is a killer fat burning furnace of an idea.

I have implemented STOP days off and on for a few years now.  Recently started to get more focused with it (1 per week sometimes 2) and it allows me more time to stop thinking about food and just write, talk or get more done (especially since I am pretty obsessive about eating and meal timing).

Adding a STOP day can increase fat burning with an increase in positive hormone output, especially in GH (growth hormone) release, but the immediate impact a STOP day has is in the total calories consumed.  I recently read that the average North American male, eats 3700 calories a day.

WOW!?! 3700 calories a day.

That is more than a brick of butter.

OK what the heck was the “brick of butter” reference for?  Well that’s a pound of fat.  A brick of butter has about 3500 calories and really is pretty much the same as a pound of fat on your body in terms of size and what it will take to burn that fat off your jiggly parts.

So in theory if you STOP eating 3700 calories and you increase calorie expenditure you could easily drop 1 pound of fat a week and change nothing else in your diet or daily routines.

Not to mention there are studies out there that clearly show if you can EAT LESS LIVE LONGER like one of our previous posts by John Barban our Director of Research and Development.

If you don’t think you can do it, just try it.  Seriously, John and Brad almost dared me to do it a few years ago and since then I have had a few personal challenges and surprises, even going as far as implementing a STOP day Friday afternoon while driving to Manhattan, New York for a trade show with the New York Sports Clubs (NYSC) and carrying on until 10pm Saturday after tear down when John and I booked it to grab a  New York Strip loin and beer in a historic restaurant downtown with a good friend of John’s.  Just for the record that was 29 hours total intermittent fasting during a crazy day at a tradeshow, it was awesome.

I know I usually tell you to work with 1 strategy, but if you really rip apart Empowered Nutrition you will find we incorporate about 7 strategies into one easy to follow Done-For-You Meal Plan that works. Adding a STOP day will only increase your results.

11 Do’s, 1 Don’t and a STOP check list for weight loss

Top 13 tips to implement a successful holiday weight loss strategy

I got 11 Do’s, 1 Don’t and a STOP tip to make your weight loss and lean muscle body a success.

Ok so some of these are going to be simple, some obvious, some said before, some new and some just plain blunt and painful.  You don’t have to implement all the tips on this check list at once, but you do need to take action and implement a few to achieve your weight loss goals before the New Year’s resolutions are wasted on yet another diet claim for 2010.


  1. “DO “- Eat breakfast – this sets you up for the day and is all powerful in terms of weight loss and lean muscle building, especially over the holidays

  2. “DO “- Eat smaller meals more often – Try to eat 5-6 times a day.  Eat the same calories, just more frequently in smaller portions, call it grazing if you like.  I bet you already eat 4-6 times a day, you just don’t count the coke and chocolate bar as a meal

  3. “DO “- Eat Fresh – The fresher the better.  Fresh fish, meat, fruits and vegetables are best.  Get them at their freshest as often as you can.  Sometimes shopping at smaller market places are best for this as they get local farmers supporting them with fresh products often times daily

  4. “DO “- Eat Treats – yeah you heard it here.  Eat treats, but keep it in check.  I have worked with some clients that just needed a treat daily, so we counted 31 pieces of chocolate and put them in a box for a daily treat.  They had the choice to eat 1 daily or all in one sitting, but that would be it for the month.  I think if you are 90-100% compliant to your game plan then a small daily reward can be factored in.

  5. “DO “- Eat Fruits and Vegetables – they are packed with nutrients.  There is this cool school of thought coming back into research and it is a pretty valid point.  Eating lots of variety may be more beneficial in small amounts than eating lots of the same fruit or veggie.  Its sort of like the theories of homeopathy or hormesis, it’s quite compelling.

  6. “DO “- Drink plenty of water – increase hydration, fat loss, energy, mental alertness, satiation, digestion

  7. “DO “- Portion Control – watch how big your portions can get.  Especially at restaurants, bigger plates, mean more foods and bigger bellies

  8. “DO “- Reduce Liquid Calories – these are pops, sodas, fruity beverages, beer, wine and spirits.  I am not saying cut them out, but control them and limit them so on the occasions you are going to indulge, then you can without hesitation as you will already be ahead of your holiday weight loss strategy

  9. “DO “- Keep a Journal – Food Journaling is a huge business.  You can get them online, offline, printed, digital, and many more.  Hey they even have cool little iPhone and Mobile Apps for this to make it easier.  Food Journals, help you track and create a more consistent eating pattern and change the way you think about food.  Sure it looks a little OCD but its all about you and your goals, not the weirdo watching you journal your foods

  10. “DO “- Read Labels – this is more on the OCD side, but it helps too.  If you read a label of two similar soups, cookies, crackers or meals, you will be able to quickly choose the one that has fewer calories and better percentages or ratios of nutrients to support your fat loss goals.  Reading = Learning = Results

  11. “DO “- Be Active – sure this is obvious, but I don’t just mean go to the gym.  Try to go for a walk 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 times a week.  Park far and use the stairs to the office.  Sure it will take more time, but worth it.  Try walking the stairs to and from or during lunch break.  Do a simple stretching routine at your desk 2-3 times a day, just 2 minutes will change the way your body looks and feels and your performance at work will benefit too.

  12. “DON’T” – Don’t Go Out on Empty – yeah all this positive stuff had to get ruined by one DON’T.  Sorry.  Don’t go shopping or out to a party on an empty stomach.  Eat a balanced nutritious meal pre event and fight off the cravings and subsequent binge eating of junk, sweats and treats.

STOP – There is a rather powerful technique you can use and that is the power of a STOP day.  Brad Pilon has a powerful theory that I use from time to time, especially before a bit EAT day and that is a STOP day.  Its that simple, just Eat STOP Eat.  STOP for 24 hours and reap the amazing benefits of all the hormones and fat loss induced results of a STOP day.  Think of it this way, the average male eats 3700 calories a day.  A brick of butter is 1 pound of fat and a pound of fat is roughly 3500 calories.  So if you don’t take in 3700 calories for a day and do burn 3500 calories from exercise that day or week, then you have a sure fire way to lose 1-2 pounds of fat a week.  A great way to ensure that is by following some Done For You Meal Plans or a Personalized Nutrition Program.

That’s it, that is a simple holiday weight loss and lean body check list you won’t have to make this year.

What’s Your Game Plan?

Do you even have a game plan?  I got something to help.

Getting things done is a BIG deal. Many people wake up and do NOT have any sort of game plan.

I find I am lost without a game plan.  Literally each day I need to have some formal thought process and even routines to get me fired up.  I can look back every time I have been in a slump and the reasons show themselves.  NO GAME PLAN.  game-plan3

No plan to get up and get at it means no drive and no reason to take immediate impactful action and get results.

If I am in a slump, it’s usually because I have planned for too much and therefore have no real game plan or I have no game plan at all.

Even when I have little to do, as long as I have a game plan, I can make things happen.  Outside of that without a game plan I fail a slow and painful experience – we’ll call it a learning lesson.

  • Do you have a game plan?
  • What’s your game plan for today?
  • What’s your game plan for a week from now?
  • What’s your game plan for a month from now?

How about December 15th, the day after you submit your Transformation Success Story to the Empowered Nutrition Transformation Challenge?  Do you have a plan to celebrate your success story?  I sure hope so. How are you going to pick up your winnings and go spend them?  What are you going to do with your prizes?  Will you get us to buy and ship a gift to a buddy, brother or someone special with your winnings or will you take the cash and reward yourself for the hard work?

I have so many thoughts I want to get out today.  So much that could and will be done that I am almost lost this week (ALMOST). But I do have a game plan, well at least forming one and refining it daily to accomplish my goals.

If you are planning a personal transformation or already mid stream in a Transformation Challenge Contest, then you need – CHECK THAT – You MUST have a game plan.

Here’s how to set your game plan into motion for ultimate success.

DREAM – set the dream in front of you.  Know how you will look, feel, behave, move, train, and dress.  Plan a reward that goes with that dream

GOAL – OK to get to the dream you want to have goals.  Stepping stones that have signified you are on track.  Each goal needs a small reward.  With rewards comes punishment.  If you don’t hit the planned goals, you do not get rewarded for failure (that’s one reason I can’t stand coaches who don’t keep score of kids sports… we are breed a bunch of frilly foo-foo’s who won’t care to excel at anything, because its “OK” to FAIL.  NO it’s not OK to fail… actually it is, only if you learn something along the way…I
digress, sorry)

PLAN – now set a plan to achieve those goals.  For example, if you are aiming to drop 20 pounds of fat and will do that in 10 weeks you can do this:

20 pounds divided by 10 weeks = 2 pounds per week fat loss

That makes it very easy to achieve, is very tangible, realistic and quantifiable to tie directly to your Goal and reward weekly, with a big one set for the final goal of 20 pounds of fat loss.

EFFORT – well you know that that is.  This is the sweat equity. This is where you put your plan into place.  If you plan to lose 20 pounds of fat in 10 weeks I sure as heck hope you planned the effort that will be required to accomplish your goals.  This is the action part of the game plan.  This is where the rubber meets the road and you show your salt.  Put in the effort and the PLAN will take shape, the GOAL will be achieved and the DREAM will be a reality.

Now do you have a plan to accomplish your goals today?

If your goal is to lose fat or gain muscle you need to plan in the 3 pillars of transformation success.

nutrition + exercise + supplements

Nutrition: I suggest you look to your nutrition first.  Meal plans will make the most impact in the shortest possible time and it starts working with no new effort, you eat every day, so just get a game plan for your nutrition so it works for your goals, not
against your goals to achieve your dream.

Exercise: this is the sweat equity part of the program.  There are thousands of workout programs that will work for you, and most likely you already have one, but it’s not working because you are lacking a nutrition game plan.  Get a meal plan that will force your body to respond to your exercise program again.

Supplements: these are to be taken as supplemental.  I love to take supplements when trying to force my body to respond better. Remember these are to “supplement” your meal plans and exercise programs.  They are not the magic pills you want them to be.

Supplements CAN work wonders, but they can also rob you of your money and leave you with little to no results.  Supplement wisely, ask a pro for advice before you spend your money and before you swallow one more pill get your meal plans in order, they will make your supplements work even better.

If you don’t have a game plan, it’s OK.  You can always formulate one or get professional help to accomplish your goals and achieve your dreams.  Personal Trainers are a great resource or do some research online, there are always great meal plans, exercise programs and supplement sales waiting to help you.

Did You Win the Halloween Battle?

So it has come and gone.  The first of our “triple threat” series – Halloween

Did you Win or Lose the Halloween battle?

It was a good time had by all I am sure.  Not to root through the kids candies, see what they can eat and what I can eat and trash the rest of the stuff that will rot their teeth and their guts.

Crazy thing is both my daughters were complaining of tummy aches within just a few hours of trick or treating.  It’s not that they ate 10 pounds of candy or anything.  It’s just that we eat clean most of the time and their bodies are just not used to an influx of sugar, mixed with chocolate, with more glucose, fructose, sucrose and the likes of many multi-syllable ingredients yet to be understood.

Honestly, if your kids or you are eating clean and all of a sudden you have an overly large influx of sugar based candy you SHOULD feel sick in the tummy, like my daughters did.

So on comes Sunday and with only a few candy treats after lunch and a few more after dinner, I think 4-5 in total they both complained they had upset tummies.  Nolan is too little; I eat his candy, so his tummy won’t hurt.  HEHE – honestly its for his protection.

So as a little bit of post Halloween fun, I have to share this one with you.  Not sure if it will get you more candy next year, but it could be just enough fun to try.

I got another one for you.  Its not nutrition or fitness related…well maybe it is.  It fits the increased heart rate,endorphin boosting, adrenalin pumping, running, and grappling conditions, maybe it could be fitness related, but more than that it is darn funny.  Seriously, if you hate aliens, then this is not for you (or maybe it is), but if you watch to the end you are going to love it.

Now that you are all laughing and in an honest mood, how much candy did you eat. Did you do better than last year? Did you set a goal and stick to it?
