Mislabelling for Profit

OK so today is not your typical welcome back from Christmas blog post you see on most sites today.

Rather this is one of disgust and embarrassment to be in the consumable goods manufacturing industry.

I want to take a moment to say “I’m SORRY…”

I didn’t do anything wrong.  Nor has Empowered Nutrition done nor ever will do any of the harm or be involved in the shenanigans of these corporate modern day snake oil sales men.

If you are saying “What the heck are you talking about, Patrick?”

Then you must not have heard about the “U.S. student sleuths use unique Cdn technology to identify mislabeled foods” report in the news.

I am impressed and very proud of these super food sleuths for doing what they did, let alone figuring out the means to do so.

I don’t want to add the entire story here, but I will give you the link and cut some highlights out for you below.

So here we have 2 very smart, dare I say genius high school students who have a passion for food and fighting crime.

I am sure they did not start out thinking their high school science project would be a superhero in disguise but it is.

I want to have you read it in its original report, but to give you some highlights of what they discovered here are a few of my personal worst bullets from the report.

Brenda Tan and Matt Cost of Trinity School in Manhattan gathered about 150 DNA samples from foods and objects in their homes and neighborhood as part of a science project with Rockefeller University and the American Museum of Natural History.

Tan said they found that 11 of the 66 fish, prepackaged and other food products bought largely at neighbourhood markets were mislabeled.

That included a specialty sheep’s milk cheese that was actually made from cow’s milk, venison dog treats made of beef, and sturgeon caviar that was really Mississippi paddlefish.

“You should get what you pay for,” Cost said from New York before their findings are published in January’s edition of BioScience magazine.

“We don’t know where it occurs, but most of the mislabelling involves substitution of something less expensive or desirable, which suggests it’s done for profit.”

The man behind the science for “barcoding life” said the following:

“DNA is resilient and it’s everywhere and a great way to identify things in the 21st century,” said Tan. “I mean, 10 years ago I don’t think this would have been possible.”

Bob Hanner, a biologist at Guelph who led the work on bar coding, praised the student project and said it shows the value of a technology that can be used to identify illicit goods at borders and track the spread of disease.

“It’s another good example of how DNA bar coding can be used to engage students in real science questions, particularly like the market substitution problem,” said Hanner, associate director of the Canadian Barcode of Life Network.

The work follows up on the findings of two other Trinity School students in 2008, who found one-quarter of fish they bought at markets and restaurants in Manhattan was mislabeled.

This rather disgusting, not that we will eat some of the unknown or at best inferior foods, but that companies protecting our health and providing us with foods to sustain life and quality of life are flat out cheating us of our money and our health.

No wonder we have so many odd illnesses that we cannot treat.  We don’t even know where we got them or what they are from, so treatment would be next to impossible with practices like these.

Hey I am all for capitalism, but not at the risk of people’s health or blatantly defrauding them of their money (maybe we should start a class action suit against these companies for fraud…)

Don’t get me wrong I am still going to buy my meat and potatioes and recommend you use food as your medicine of the future, but buyer be ware my friend, buyer beware.  I am sorry that as an advocate for food I even have to say that.  For all of those capitalists at any costs corporate pigs, “I am sorry”.

I recently had the honor of getting Nick Nilsson the crazy mad scientist of insane exercises and training that actually work and stimulate muscle from a million angles.

It was great to squeeze some time out of Nick as he is closing in on some amazing new ground breaking books and prepping for a month of down time with his family over the Christmas Holidays.

PM:  Nick, I am excited to have you on this podcast today.  I think I can tell our friends a bit about you, but will then turn it over to you to give us the real you.

First of all I know Nick is a real deal trainer and innovator.  They guy keeps busting tail in the gym, his home gym and outdoors every day looking to better himself and to come up with a new and innovative sometime crazy way to stimulate muscle.  Today I am interviewing Nick for his pretty potent system Metabolic Surge Program as it ties in strongly with my beliefs, practices and teachings at EmpoweredNutrition.com in building a lean, sculpted, powerful and functional physique that looks good and how his programs can help.

I will also include links to his other products in our show notes for you to check out.  Alright let’s get into this.  So tell me… Who is Nick Nilsson?

NN:   Well basically, I’m a mad scientist…in a good way, of course!  I’m constantly experimenting with new exercises and training techniques and have pretty much defined myself, as it relates to training, by constant creativity.

My focus has always been on getting the best results possible for the effort I’m putting in as well as just having FUN in the gym.  I’ve been in the online training business for about 10 years now…I just love being able to get all this great stuff out to a big audience.

PM:  How long have you been training?

NN:   I’ve been training about 18 years now.  Started when I was 17 years old and about 145 lbs soaking wet.  Was the typical skinny guy, wanting to get big…and actually accomplished it pretty well within my first year of training.

PM:  Nick, it’s a bit insane out there these days with all the self proclaimed gurus and pros, tell me what do you pull to back up your work, what degrees, certifications do you carry with the initials and digits behind your name?

NN:  I have a degree in Physical Education, covering advanced biomechanics, kinesiology, physiology, anatomy…the whole 9 yards.  I’ve also got a degree in psychology as well.  I have my personal training certification and spend a lot of time reading up on training techniques, pulling out the best stuff and working with it to improve and innovate.

PM: How many books and programs do you currently have available? (Remember the original podcast and text interview was 12-16-2009)

NN:   I’ve got 9 books out right now…everything from unique exercises for specific bodyparts (like The Best Chest Exercises You’ve Never Heard Of” to muscle-building programs to fat loss programs.

PM:  OK great, but let’s get serious, names and initials aside, the proof is in the walking around weight.  After all you must walk the walk if you are gonna shoot the crap and talk.  What’s yours at these days?

NN:   I’m about 190 to 200 lbs normally.  And I try and stay fairly lean all the time.

PM:  All things aside, what is your Favourite Exercise?

NN:   That would have to be the trap bar deadlift.  To me, there’s nothing better than piling a boatload of weight on the bar and just digging in and pulling it off the ground.  I like it better than regular squatting because you can really go for broke – my best deadlift with that bar is 560 lbs.  I’ve also done 315 for 30 reps.

Though I have to say, in close second would be lockout partial squats…the kind where you can pile a thousand pounds on the bar and it’s just you against the weight.  The highest I’ve hit on that exercise is 1200 lbs and I once did a set of partials for high reps with 950 lbs for 150 reps (that was just NUTS – I was at my very strongest at the time and I think I even bent the bar at the gym I was training at).

PM:  Why do you think the Metabolic Surge Program will be so effective with Empowered Nutrition?

PM:  What tips would you give our friends when combining the Metabolic Surge Program and Empowered Nutrition?

NN: The best thing you can do is to first make sure you know the nutrients you’re supposed to be eating during the Surge program and what nutrients make up the specific meal plans in the Empowered Nutrition program.  You’re going to need to know how to match up the correct meal plans to the training phase you’re on in the Surge program.

So pretty much having a good understanding of what you’re doing and what’s required nutritionally is very important.

PM:  I want to point out that if you go to MetabolicSurgeProgram.com you will see that Nick is giving us a pretty unique package and price.  But what really impresses me is that within a few paragraphs Nick asks us to identify what level of training experience we have and with that information he jumps us to the critical information to help us properly assess the program for our needs and training experience.  Nick can you elaborate on that for us?

NN:  Yep, I wanted to make sure that everybody, no matter what training level they were at, understood that they can use and benefit from the Surge program.  In the book, I’ve included a preparation program that walks people through from completely beginner to a Level 1 program that has reduced training volume (fewer sets) and more rest in between sets, so it’s a bit easier.

For the more advanced trainers, I’ve got the main program, which is really challenging, even if you are very advanced.

Pretty much I wanted people to have the idea that this program will work for them and to know what it can do for them, which is really, burn fat extremely quickly while keeping and even building muscle mass.

PM:  Nick, there is a lot of advice to training out there.  There are literally hundreds of programs that claim to be different.  Why is Metabolic Surge Program so different?

NN:  The Surge program stands out because of how the training is directly targeted to the specific nutrients you’re eating in each phase of the program.  How you train depends on whether you’re eating low-fat or low-carb.

You really need to train completely differently when you’re eating different nutrients.  This programs takes advantage of the changing hormonal states that these different nutrients induce in your body.

For example, in the low-carb phase, the training on the last few days is focused on building up lactic acid.  Lactic acid causes an increase in Growth Hormone levels but ONLY when insulin levels are low.  So by doing this style of training while eating low carb, you’re in that low-insulin state and GH secretion is maximize.  This has a great effect on fat loss.

Same thing with low-fat eating – when you come off low-carb eating, you put back carbs and your muscles pull in a lot of nutrients (carbs, protein) and water.  This is an extremely anabolic situation and the training is designed to take full advantage of it by focusing your efforts on muscle growth.

PM: OK so I want to share something with you before we go much further.  When you go to check out the Metabolic Surge Program and you read up on the entire package you will see that Nick has included some meal plans from Dr. John Berardi.  That’s pretty cool, John and I share some history and some similar philosophies when it comes to nutrition.  So think of it as a nutritional bonus and do your best to adopt the best of both programs to better enhance your results.

Nick, you and I are both pretty hung up on how nutrition and exercise work together with synergy and you have often heard me saying “Nutrition is for Fat Loss, Exercise is for Muscle Building”.  (By the way, Adam is a great Success Story of how he implemented your Metabolic Surge into a bigger picture for a year plus long journey) Now that could be confusing to some, but the act of building and maintaining muscle with exercise is part of the process of burning fat.  What are your thoughts on the power of Empowered Nutrition with the Metabolic Surge Program in terms of Energy, Recuperation, Cardio and Fat Loss?

NN: I like to use the analogy of your body as a car…muscle is the engine that burns the fuel but to really get the best performance out of your muscles, you need the fuel it with the best fuel you can!  And that is where Empowered Nutrition comes in.

PM:  Nick, now I have to butt heads with you for a minute.  I will go on record over and over again stating optimal results require the 3 pillars of performance and those 3 pillars are Nutrition, Exercise and Supplements in that order.  You say Supplements are not required, but then help everyone better understand how they can be effectively used to their advantage for fat loss and muscle building.  Give me some of your opinions and supplements you would recommend if ever asked?

NN: I’m actually a big fan of supplements.  You don’t HAVE to take them in order for the program to work but to really get the most out of the program I DO recommend some basic nutritionally-oriented, proven supplements…things like program, vitamins, minerals, fish oil, creatine, glutamine, that kind of thing.

I stay away from fat burners and other supplements that are marketing-oriented and basically unproven in the real world.

You don’t absolutely need them, but I highly recommend then.

The first is the Power Rack Weighted Push-Up and believe me, if you’ve ever found push-ups to not provide you with enough resistance for muscle and strength-building, THIS is going to change that big-time. It’s basically a way to add direct resistance (as much or as little as you want) to the push-up without having to have a partner sit on your back to do it.

The other one he’s got for you is actually a training technique…it’s TOUGH but VERY effective…

This technique, that he calls “ratcheting”, is a way to squeeze a rep or two more out of a set without a spotter – because Nick trains alone, he had to come up with something to really maximize the productive last few reps of his sets without any assistance and this was the result! This technique will allow you to get at least one and sometimes two more productive reps at the end of a heavy set.

Tips For A Great After Shot

So the transformation challenge is almost over.  D Day is looming, you want the best “After” Photos you can muster up.  To help you I have talked a few things over with my good friend John Barban, he’s that creative training guy with Adonis Index (www.WhatsYourAdonisIndex.com).

Clothing – select appropriate clothing.  Start with your After clothing.  I like to use single color, snug clothing.  Typically you would choose a set of yoga pants and top.  Guys, sports shorts or your Marky Mark Walberg Calvin Klein boxers will do the trick, I have some snug Under Amour shorts I prefer these days.  I would go with black, white, dark blue or green.  Try to use one that is similar in look and color to your Before Photos Clothing.  That will really make things pop and people will notice you and your transformations, not your clothes.abs_-_beach

2.    Make Up – wear it, but don’t go looking like Tammy Faye Baker.  Just add enough to add strong eccentrics to your lines and color.  Too much and the lights will make it pop up.  Too little and photography lighting or stage lighting will wash you away.  Shooting your photos at home, just barely go darker and stronger than normal.  Be sure to match your face to your body color.  Everybody screws this up the first few times.  One time I went on stage and the guy next to me looked like he cut off his head and glued it on someone else’s body.  His face was white like Casper the ghost and his body looked like the darkest corner of the farthest reaches of outer space.

3.    Hair – Dew it.  Go ahead, go get a cut and style, it’s worth it.  After all it’s not often you do this sort of thing.  But don’t go color crazy, just style, trim and highlight.  Remember your hair will last longer than the spray tan and you want to be proud to show off those pictures. Hair can make all the difference to a good tan and great body.

4.    Skin – I hope you have been showering, loofah and coloring for the week.  This will give you deep color and make your pictures show real good.  If you have blemishes, don’t be afraid to use a little foundation, even for the leg bumps you might get from shaving.

5.    Shave – Make sure you shave.  YES GUYS!  You shave your face, but shave your body too.  Trust me, it will look awesome and if you don’t like it, it grows back.  Don’t be afraid it will be thicker or darker… that’s a myth to some extent, my wife’s an aesthetician and I have been doing it for almost 2 decades now.

6.    Glow – you want to GLOW, not shine.  That said, just before the photos, you want to apply a light coating of a spray oil.  I am assuming no one ran out to buy a $60, 4 ounce jar of Final Touch.  Baby Oil reflects light.  Pam and the likes will refract the light around your body to highlight and accentuate your curves.  DON’T put any oil on your face, the lights hit it first and you could wash out all your features so no one will see its you in the pictures.

7.    Colour – it’s a bit late now, but I hope you used color all week, even the last few weeks and tanned a few times a week for the last 2-6 weeks.  Not to worry if you haven’t.  DON’T run out and tan or burn now.  It’s too late to create a base and will end up retaining water and leaving all your hard earned definition and muscle tone under a layer or bloated burnt skin.

8.    Hydration – stay well hydrated, but in the last few days and the day of the shoot reduce your water to minimal levels.  This will help you keep water retention down and show your details.

9.    Get Pumped – a light pump is all you need. Just do a series of body weight or band workouts and get the results you are looking for, not an engorged non detailed body part.

10.    Angles – play the angles.
a.    When taking your photo add lighting at various levels and angles.
b.    Get your camera set up, just slightly higher than head level.  Tilt your chin up just a bit.  This reduces any accidental double chins.
c.    Angle your body this will give you a leaner appearance than head on.
d.    Angle your upper and lower body giving a slight twist makes the torso show the hard work you put into this project.
e.    Angle your hands on your hips and other places.  This leads to a leaner appearance.

11.    Back Ground
– plain, simple no images or distractions.  This is your body we want to highlight.  White, black or tan backgrounds work best.  Just make sure it is different than the color of the outfit you are wearing.

12.    FUN – HAVE FUN.  Take a million + 1 photo’s.  It’s worth every second and digital snap you take.  Change into 10 0diffeent outfits and poses; you will thank me for this tip later.

13.    SUBMIT – send in your transformations success stories and don’t forget to include your 200 word success story.  Oh yeah, just in case you forgot you MUST have a paper with the date to verify you actually did what you said you did on the date you said it happened.  Thanks for all your hard work I can’t wait to see your success story.

14.    PARTY – do exactly that.  I always planned a party dinner after the event and so should you.

Cool New Tools and a Question For You

I have been working diligently at many things to help increase your success with fat loss and muscle building.  Don’t get me wrong, each one is calculated and will help me increase the company’s success, but not all are about the success of Empowered Nutrition.  In fact most of these new projects are directly related to increasing your success and providing you with more tools that will help you succeed in your goals while making it easier to do so.

Empowered Success Coach – this is a very powerful program that is FREE with each and every Personalized Nutrition Program.  It is NOT to replace the Empowered Nutrition Private Members Area, but a completely free “Add-On”.  This is the power of a coach working (via email) to keep you motivated and on track and educate you along the way for increased nutrition, exercise and supplement knowledge.  This is a major undertaking and will work with you for your 90 day transformation and beyond.  You will get more support when you need it and less when you don’t, but Your Success Coach will be there for you driving you forward to your goals.
