OK so this is pretty impressive to say the least. My buddy Mike Westerdal is a strong guy, but the cool thing is he is one of the nicest guys around… but clearly he can build up some anger management as you will see in these 2 videos of Mike doing 315 pounds for 8 and then doing 405 pounds for reps.
Critical Bench 2.0
I have done 315 pounds for 3 sets of 10.
I have done 405 pounds for 4, 5 and 6 reps just a handful of times, but this is just awesome muscle and power.
So in my honor to August is Awesome Muscle Month, here is Mike Westerdal, Owner of Critical Bench doing 315 and 405 on the Bench Press.

Even though lifting that kind of weight is impressive, its not very practical, unless you are in the habit of lifting cars.
I believe a more lean and cut physique is more useful in todays world.

I totally get what you are saying and these days I prefer a lean body, but what built my muscles back in the day was heavy, strong and intelligent lifting. Now I work on staying lean and strong, not big and powerful.
Thanks for watching and commenting.

How is having a lean and cut physique useful?
If you were to come upon an accident where a person was trapped under a car would your lean cut physique be able to lift the car off the trapped individual? I think not! If I were the one trapped I would be praying for the person who can benchpress 405.

Good call Tony. That is precisely why training for both “SHOW” and “GO” muscles is important.
BTW if you go to Mike’s website you will see a cool video where he actually does 652 pounds in a meet. Check It Out

i dont understand why it is necessary to do bench press of 405 pounds which is fatal to your body parts; such as, shoulders, wrists etc. we do exercise to feel good and not to coerce ourselves. i hope reasonable lifting of weights would help to keep up your body toned up and healthy. it is just useless!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Anwar, the answer to some is simple… because they can.
It is NOT essential to health and a good body, but for some it is what motivates them to the next level to lift more or last longer.
If this post was about the Ironman in Hawaii or running marathons would that be any different than bench pressing 405 pounds. I think not. It is about testing yourself, pushing yourself to do more, do it better and do it more efficiently.
Remember this is about “cycling” your training all year round. Strength, Power, Energy, Endurance and sport specific training and flexibility should always be on your mind year round.

I think some people are missing the point! Do “we” need to climb Mount Everest?, do “we” need to hike the length of the Amazon? This”Critical Bench” show you the human capability, some of us push it to the limits so others of us know it is possible for us to do more, not, do exactly what they did. Do we all need to pull a bus or jet plane? We all however can get stronger, more developed, and iprove our health beyond where we are now!!!

I find it amusing when someone, anyone, says that something that they themselves are unable or unwilling to do, is useless or a complete waste of time… Not that everyone wants to or has to benchpress over 400 lbs. But to randomly bash those who do… Find a better use of your time and intellect my friend!!

Thanks Jon, I totally agree. I mean not all of us (or many) can run a triathlon, but when I post a review of that training, I never get complaints from the BIG BOYS and power guys and gals about it.
It seems that brute force is a touchy subject.
On that note, have you seen my mountain bike picture over on facebook? Not many guys riding all out for an hour straight at my size. Check out the image, let me know what you think and be my friend… please…
