Fish Oils and Healthy Joints

Arthritis and Joint Disorders are inflammatory conditions linked to toxic free radicals. Conventional treatments, such as non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory prescription drugs (NSAIDs), only offers symptomatic relief; they do not reverse arthritic conditions. This group of inflammatory drugs including Aleave, Motrin IB and aspirin, can lead to side effects like stomach ulcers, kidney problems and ringing in the ears.  

These drugs hamper joint healing and the muscle-building process itself, which is why an increasing number of people with joint problems are choosing alternative approaches. One of the most promising natural alternatives is Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.

Omega-3 fatty acids can help to ease morning stiffness and tenderness in the joints. Clinical studies of Omega-3 supplements in patients with rheumatoid arthritis have demonstrated a reduction of arthritic symptoms; including pain, the number of tender joints and morning stiffness. Also, studies conducted in this population have shown that taking Omega-3 supplements led to a decreased use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids, with effects peaking over a 6-8 month period.

A very promising, recent study published in Surgical Neurology investigated Omega-3 supplementation (with EPA and DHA) for non-surgical neck and back pain. The results were striking – a majority reported improvement in their pain symptoms and 4 in 5 patients were satisfied with their improvement.

The polyunsaturates found in Omega-3 Fish Oil have significant anti-inflammatory properties. It is thought that they work by suppressing the production of inflammation.

In vivo, studies have shown that Fish Oil consumption reduces the production of the body’s pro-inflammatory compounds.

Rheumatoid Arthritis; Reduced Joint Pain and Stiffness
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto-immune disease that can affect anyone of us from all ages. An immune system defect enables the body to attack its own tissue, resulting in inflammation in the lining of the joints, and can sometimes occur in other parts of the body.

Early research concentrated on rheumatoid rather than osteo-arthritis as inflammation is the primary symptom. There is now an accumulation of evidence to show that the long chain Omega-3 fatty acids can indeed reduce joint pain and stiffness and allow a reduction in the dosage of aspirin-like, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that can damage the stomach lining. An overall survey of 10 double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trials confirmed that Omega-3 Fish Oil taken for three months was linked with a reduction in joint tenderness and morning stiffness.

Omega-3 Fish Oil Relieves Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis, sometimes described as ‘wear and tear arthritis’ is more widespread. It is caused by gradual destruction over time of joint cartilage (the ‘gristle’ that cushions bones and prevents them from grinding against each other) and is therefore associated with the ageing process. It can be a painful and disabling condition but not everyone is badly affected. Only as recently as 1998 did evidence begin to emerge that the long-chain of Omega-3 fatty acids could also help in osteoarthritis.

Several controlled, randomized trials have confirmed that Omega-3 Fish Oil taken for three months was indeed associated with a reduction in joint tenderness and morning stiffness.

As we age, these Omega Fish Oils are a healthy alternative and should be considered as a natural insurance policy we should all use to increase quality and quantity of life.

Summary
Numerous clinical trials have found omega-3s to be useful for addressing both the causes and the pain associated with arthritis. Fish oil containing omega-3’s is an affordable supplement for reducing joint and tendon pain as well as reducing inflammation and preventing wear and tear.

Of course, omega-3 fatty acids are also considered essential to good health so there are many reasons to make omega-3 fish oil a daily habit.

    Hi Patrick,

    I can absolutely relate to today’s article!

    I used to suffer from ankle and knee pain to the point where I was having trouble kneeling down to change my children’s diapers.

    But then I started taking Krill Oil…my personal choice for Omega-3 fatty acids…and noticed an immediate improvement. I still have a little pain, but it is much improved from what it was.

      I agree. Oils are the lubricants of our joints, mind and fat loss.

      Pete you and I both know that the oil does not directly “oil” the joints, but it helps in a BIG way to creating the hormones we need to properly repair and replenish the body.
