On Eve Of Winter Olympics, 30 Athletes Banned For Doping

I just had to post this up… I meant to get this up on Friday afternoon, but to be honest my schedule was jammed and I had some challenges with my computers and internet access… AS IF!?  I mean really why in today’s day and age would I have issues with computers, networking and connecting to the internet.  Rediculous to say the least.

So my issue, rant and post is mostly a repost of a news clipping.  You have to know that no matter how strongly you put the three pillars of performance to work in your life (nutrition, exercise and supplements) there will always be people that just need to push the envelope and do “whatever” it takes to win the gold.  Even if it means performance enhancing drugs.

Before you go crazy, I don’t condone or condemn those that use performance enhancing drugs, but… BUT… this is a BIG BUT… there is a time and place for them and when taking part in a drug free tested sport I do NOT condone the use of drugs.  Not one bit, not even for a second.  Now on the back side I have to remind you that they are all cheating in someway or somehow regardless of what you think.  Remember Ben Johnson, yup the Canadian that won the fastest man alive award almost 2 decades before the rest of the world could see Bolt even come close to the time that got Ben BUSTED.  Well remember how Ben got faster and faster?  Yeah… Do you remember that so did Carl Lewis and the rest of the pack?  NOPE… never noticed… well they did and if Ben got Busted, the rest of the group should have been busted as well.  Its crap… its a lie and its rampant in almost every sport.  That said check out this post below that I pulled from Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty

(Original from Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty)  The International Olympic Committee says 30 athletes who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs during the run-up to the 2010 Winter Olympics have been disqualified.
Many cases are in the biathlon and long-distance crosscountry skiing events, where increased endurance from doping gives users an unfair competitive advantage.

The announcement comes ahead of tonight’s opening ceremony in Vancouver. Nearly 2,700 athletes representing 80 countries will parade through the city’s domed BC Place stadium. They are competing in 15 different winter sports — categorized as ice sports, alpine skiing and snowboarding, and Nordic events.

Olympic organizers say they hope the disqualifications ahead of the competition will reduce the number of scandals in which podium winners are later stripped of their medals for doping violations.

The World Anti-Doping Agency says that, “in the interest of fair play,” it will not announce the names or nationalities of the disqualified athletes until they have exhausted all avenues of appeal.

But IOC President Jacques Rogge said on February 8 that he raised concerns directly with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and the Russian sports minister because of 11 winter sports doping cases involving Russian athletes during the past year.

“I insisted on the need to have strong action on doping,” Rogge said. [Medvedev] promised that he will launch that, and he was very explicit also in public declarations after that.”

Russian ice-hockey player Svetlana Terenteva was reprimanded but not disqualified in the first Vancouver doping case that has been finalized.

Particularly Worrying

IOC Vice President Thomas Bach says Terenteva tested positive for a “light stimulant” contained in a nose spray that is usually not prohibited outside of competition. During her appeal, Terenteva admitted using Rhinofluimucil under prescription in January to cure a bad head cold. Use of the substance during the games would have meant her disqualification.

Rogge said on Feburary 8 that Russian doping cases are particularly worrying just two weeks before Russia takes the Olympic torch for the 2014 Winter Olympics in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi. Medvedev himself was planning to attend Vancouver’s closing ceremony and handover on February 28.

Thousands of tests will be carried out on athletes in Vancouver during the next two weeks to ensure against doping. World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) President John Fahey says it is now harder than ever for doping cheats to go undetected at Olympic Games.

“We are getting better as time goes by through a number of methods,” Fahey said. “We’re smarter now than we were a year ago, and I believe we’ll continue to improve there. That makes WADA and all the antidoping agencies all over the world operating under the code far more effective.”

Germany, the United States, Russia, Austria, and Canada are considered the winter sports powerhouses that are expected to be near the top of the overall medal standings in 2010.

Super Food and Super Bowl Ads

Good morning… I thought I turned this on for you last night during the 4rth quarter of the New Orleans Saints playing a heck of a come back dog fighting gnashing and gnawing game against the heavily favored Manning and his powerful Indy Colts.

Well I guess while I missed the first quarter waiting for wings, then getting a call to go get some medication for my oldest (6year old) daughters ear infection and get home to get something in her to drop her fever I must have messed up the code to post this at the start of the fourth quarter.

Great news is that like many of you I had some extra goodies.  Medium “heat” wings, a few handfuls of chips and some diet pepsi (it came with the wings free, got to love when the big corporate sponsors run promos like this for the little people like us).  The other great thing was I got to see some of the game, but more importantly it was with a good friend and in the end with my amazing wife.  So I got the best of both worlds, watching the Super Bowl with both Family and Friends.  Thank you Lord.

So before I give you the Super Bowl Ads to watch in the comfort of your own browser, I have to ask, could there be any team more deserving than the Saints this year?  Could any City or State be more deserving of a come back culminated with their team being on top of the world for one of the BIGGEST sporting events in the world?

I think not.  Congradulations to the Saints, New Orleans and to Lousianna for a super come back from that beast of burden that nearly wiped you out a few years ago.  You deserve every bit of publicity and appreciation you can get for the NFL Champions.

MOTIVATED & EMPOWERED TO SUCCEED (part 3)

Setting Goals to Stay Motivated

I don’t want to spend too much time harping on goal setting and how important it is to instant and long term success.  So let`s get right into it.  If you need a moment to visualize take it now.  Think of everything you have always wanted in life and what it will look, feel, smell and taste like when you achieve that goal and reward yourself.

This may sound new age and a bit too funky for you, but trust me it helps.

Now lets move into it…

YOUR BIG GOAL

This is the goal that you will achieve over time with dedication and commitment. It’s important that your big goal is realistic. One of the biggest reasons people fail at achieving their goals is because their goals are unrealistic. Gaining 20 pounds of muscle is a realistic goal, but gaining 20 pounds of muscle in a couple of weeks is not! If you are uncertain about what a realistic goal is, a consultation with your personal trainer, a fitness or nutrition professional, or just some research on your own will go a long way. Here are some examples of realistic and attainable goals:

• Losing 50 to 100 pounds this year. Expect to lose one to two pounds per week. One to two pounds per week = 50 to 100 pounds this year.

• Losing three, five, even ten pounds in the first two weeks. Expect to lose the most weight in the first two weeks and continue to lose one to two pounds weekly thereafter.

• Losing ten percent body fat. Expect to lose one to three percent of your body fat each month, depending on your starting body fat percentage.

• Gaining twelve to twenty-four pounds of lean muscle. You can gain one to two pounds of lean body mass per month.

• Increasing your strength by twenty percent. You can increase your strength by two to five per cent each month.

Now it’s time for you to write down your big goal. Your big goal should have a tangible component (like how many pounds you will lose), a timeline (how long it will take you to lose those pounds), an intangible component (how you will feel after losing that much weight), and a big reward when you achieve it. For example, your big goal might be, “I will reduce my body fat percentage to 15 percent and my weight by 35 pounds in one year. I’m going to feel fit, healthy and sexy! My reward will be a Caribbean cruise.”

My goal was to go from 263 pounds to 196 pounds on stage at a body building contest.  I came close, in fact I missed my goal by 8 pounds.  The good thing was I gained 8 pounds of lean muscle while dieting down.  take a look…

YOUR BIG GOAL AND REWARD: (write it down) _________________________________

YOUR SMALL GOALS

Now that you’ve written down your big goal, you can develop your small goals to help keep you on track to success. Typically, small goals will be goals that you accomplish in a month or a week. To develop your small goals, take the timeline from your big goal and divide it into weeks, then work out what you must accomplish each week to achieve your big goal. If your big goal is to lose 50 pounds in one year, divide the year by 52 to get the number of weeks. Now divide the number of pounds you want to lose by 52, which equals 0.96. That means you need to lose less than one pound per week if your big goal is to lose 50 pounds in one year.

Your small goals should include a time component, a tangible component, an intangible component and a small reward. For example, your small goals could be, “Each week, I will lose two pounds and feel a little slimmer and a little stronger. I will treat myself to an ice cream sundae as my reward.”

YOUR SMALL GOALS AND REWARDS: (write it down) _________________________________

You can apply the same techniques for achieving dreams and goals you’ve outlined here to other dreams and goals in your life. Try writing down some of your personal dreams and goals, break them down into small goals, then go achieve them and reward yourself.

You may be surprised by how easy it is when you do it this way!

So get fired up, get excited, visualize your dream, set your goals, plan the work and work the plan, go out and put the effort into Your Best Lean Body ever!

Cool New Tools and a Question For You

I have been working diligently at many things to help increase your success with fat loss and muscle building.  Don’t get me wrong, each one is calculated and will help me increase the company’s success, but not all are about the success of Empowered Nutrition.  In fact most of these new projects are directly related to increasing your success and providing you with more tools that will help you succeed in your goals while making it easier to do so.

How to Increase Your Skin Tone

Well today as promised I want to discuss “How to Increase Your Skin Tone”.

This one could be a bit odd to many of you, but it’s an old dog and pony show that I am very familiar with from my days competing.  You don’t need to go as far as I would, but here’s the gist of it all.

I start tanning 2 times a week from week 6 if I can.  If you haven’t don’t worry.  I suggest getting a tan today and Wednesday, just a light one, don’t burn.

If you have been tanning, stop on Wednesday, maybe Thursday, no later.

Tanning, especially burning will cause you to retain water in the skin.  It draws it from your muscles and stores it in the skin.  It’s a reaction to the harmful rays.  So less is better and some color is better than none and way better than burning for many reasons, the most important being health and well being and cancer free.

Consistent tanning can help you dry out a bit as well.

OK, so this part is going to be a bit odd for you.

LUBE UP!

Yeah that is WHACKED!  I said it, “LUBE UP”.  I want to help you get great skin tone and elasticity.  To do that, you will need to keep soft and moisturized every day, maybe 2-3 times a day to be sure.  It will help skin color and tone and allow that skin to shrink wrap your body and those new cuts just a bit deeper.  It really does help a lot.

Start using a loofah or scrub bud all over your body.  This will help get the body ready for the lotion, slough off dry dead skin and make way for new skin as well as prep the body for better color.

If you are going to spray tan, now is the time to start, not the day before.  Sometimes you can end up looking more like a messy mud pie than a buffed and built bronzed goddess or statue of desirable proportions.

Go deep, get a deep rich color, layered on layer on layer on layer.  Buff each day in the shower and apply a new even coating to your color and moisturize often during the day.  When you think you are dark enough go darker.

Take a look at these photos and tell me if you see the difference.  Seriously I know you are not going on stage, but you get the idea, the lights can wash out your cuts and lean lines fast.  A healthy tan looks good and if you are onstage you need to look like a chocolate moose before going up there, even if you are naturally dark skinned you need a tan and some added color.  Trust me it helps.

No scrubbing, No tanning and No fluids on Sunday.  Last shower is Sunday morning for Monday mid morning photos… then you can shower again.

How to increase the tight lean look

OK, I think that title says it all.

Now the question is “How to increase the tight lean look, Patrick, you meat head nutritionist?”

Well its not always simple, but the answer is true.  Blood, sweat and tears.  OK maybe not that bad, but it will be a challenge.  I know you are up for it and it will be easier than you think.

Let’s Review:

We doubled our water – this is paramount to getting just a bit tighter than you could expect and paramount if you want to look tighter and leaner than an average day at the beach.

How else can we look tighter with nutrition?  Simply you can follow the previous suggestion and the outline for water intake, but there is another step to this trick.  You MUST swap all your simple carbs, fruits and dairies for more complex, high fibre and nutrient dense options.

  • Bananas for Rice Cakes
  • Rice Cakes for Potatoes
  • Apples for Oatmeal
  • Grapes for Broccoli
  • Milk for Protein Shakes made with water

You get the idea.  You also want to start to limit what we call dry carbs.  These are simply the breads and pastas and for the most part man made products.  These are already limited in your meal plans, but even this moderate shift away from dry carbs, fruits and dairy will make a huge impact on your appearance and quite honestly will dip a bit deeper into the fat stores for more crisp looks to your new lean body.

I would even suggest going with a tried and true STOP day.  Brad Pilon can give you a ton of science on this Eat STOP Eat theory, but I know how it works for fat loss and in the case water shed.  Here’s the snap shot of it all.

Eating causes water retention.  STOP allows the body to clear the system for better digestion.  Eating can fill out the muscle bellies, but also cause you to bloat in the waist and spill over to the skin giving that watery and smooth appearance.  A STOP can cause you to burn just a few more fat cells in the last few days.  Most importantly, carbs retain water, a STOP day will cut that problem off.  Now here’s the neat cool thing I know from experience.  A STOP day is not the magic you are looking for.  In fact it’s the eat day right after the STOP day.  You see when you start to eat again, the body naturally has a rebound effect and dumps a load of water.  This is especially true when you take in solid amounts of protein and fat and keep the carbs limited.  If you haven’t played with a STOP day, I might suggest you skip this trick.  But if you have done Eat STOP Eat and it works for you, then you will want your STOP day to be next Saturday December 12th for a full 24 hours.

How do you do it. Eat the Empowered Nutrition way until Friday evening, say 5pm.  Then after a solid Empowered Dinner, you will STOP all calories for 24 hours, until dinner tomorrow.  Eat a clean Empowered Dinner on Saturday at 6pm.  No snack that night, just 1 meal.  Then Sunday start with an Empowered Nutrition Breakfast, without any simple carbs, I suggest your favorite Empowered Oatmeal and Egg or Protein Smoothie breakfast (just keep an eye on your liquid intake) and get back on track eating every 3 hours for the rest of the day.

There you have it, one more way to get tight and lean without doing anything at all.  Literally NOTHING at all.  Very cool and just so we are very aware, from personal experience it works.

I want to help everyone get ready for their after pictures; we are closing on 1 week from now. WOW! That has flown by.

I want to help you get that tight, dry look and show a nice trim and toned body.

To start, last week I said in a blog post and email to double your water intake of what you normally drink in a day. Hopefully you have done that. If not do not worry, everything will work just fine. Follow these instructions.

Keep the same level of black coffee, tea to the same level as always. No milk, no dairy, no sugar.
Swap all fruits, dairy and simple sugars to more complex ones, like mixed veg… my favourite is mixed beans, warm or cold in olive oil with spices and dry herbs at every meal for the best and most enjoyable flavors.

(Dry herbs do not have an abundance of calories to require caloric adjustments, enjoy)

  • Double your water starting Friday December 4th, 2009 – that is 10 days out, Monday the 14th does not count as you should take your photos in the morning
  • Drink double your water for 6 days to next Thursday evening
  • Return water intake to normal Friday
  • Reduce Water by half of normal on Saturday
  • Half that on Sunday by noon; with zero water after noon on Sunday until after your photo shoot, just enough to wet your lips and brush your teeth, that’s it…I even went so far as to chew ice and spit it out just to satisfy the wet lip needs when needed, but that is a bit extreme

Rememeber you will not be dehydrating yourself. You are super compensating for over a week. You are forcing the body to get used to a new level of hydration for a week. Then just as your body thinks its got it figured out and ready to go back a normal level of bathroom breaks, you cut it in half (or back to regular intake). This causes your body to release more than it takes in, but in reality you are still taking in plenty of liquids.

  • Cutting your water in half for a day is no big deal.
  • Cutting your water in half again is fine, still healthy functions will remain.
  • Going zero water for the next 12-24 hours is a mental challenge, but easily overcome.

To aid in your fat loss, you will want to consider the use of an extra cup of coffee in the last few days. I like to have 1-2 extra coffees hot or cold over ice to help in the “drying” results.

You can also swap carbs for things like asparagus, lemon and cucumber to increase the mild diuretic results. Some people like to drink lemon grass green tea as it has superior detox and drying results than black coffee.

So I spent some time this weekend working on a few things that will be a real hoot to post and a few others of self indulgence like hanging out with some buddies watching the UFC 106 on Saturday night with Matt Serra, former UFC Welterweight Champion.  Then on Sunday I spent time with my family ate some cake and went treated myself to a pretty cool test drive of a car way out of my price range, but hey I wanted to set the bar pretty high.  Apparently I did as the guy in the seat who was there to keep me honest said he grabbed the “oh S*%!” handles hitting some fast and hard corners.  All I can say is WOW!
