There are four things you can do to increase your odds of living a longer, healthier life. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), seven out of 10 deaths in the United States each year are caused by chronic illnesses. Fifty percent of all deaths are from heart disease, cancer, and stroke.



Some lifestyle choices can add to our risk of chronic illness and early death. A CDC study found that people who engaged in all four of the healthy lifestyle choices listed below are 66 percent less likely to die early from cancer, 65 percent less likely to die early from cardiovascular disease, and 57 percent less likely to die early from other causes compared to people who don’t.

There are a lot of ways you can live longer, but these are 4 basic staples that cover all your bases.  Seriously you should already know the answers, but knowing and doing are two different beasts.

Coconuts... Lower Cholesterol?

OK so I was digging around and had a craving... several in fact and it prompted me to do some digging on something very specific... coconuts!

Who can resist a coconut, with its creamy, tropical flavor? For too long, many Americans have done just that.

Thankfully, that misguided coconut era is over. The coconut is receiving long-overdue accolades as a highly nutritious food. Traditional American uses of coconut are sugar-laden affairs — think baked goods like pies, cakes and macaroons — that mask its health-promoting properties. Thanks to the Internet, there’s a ton of nutrition information or “MIS-information” available. Unfortunately, some of it comes from unqualified people writing about their own theories or companies pushing their products. I buy these meals because they are fast to make and I buy the yogurt because all you have to do it take the top off and it's a “ready-made” meal just like the lean cuisines.   Do you think I would be better off eating an apple, orange or other fruit in place of these?

Why is today a perfect day to get started?  Simply because the holiday treats and eats are wreaking serious havoc on my body.  I have constant heart burn, feel sluggish and a constant foggy haze over my brain.

So this will kick off my personal journey to clean up my sweets and treats.  The side effects could lead to detoxification, clarity, mental alertness, fat loss, less water retention, increased energy and overall well being.

The number one thing to do is get back to drinking plenty of water.  This will help reduce cravings, snacking and help detox the body.

Here is a snap shot of the results...
 
-100% of the participants shared a little more about themselves
-2% of the participants are undecided of their gender... Really that was just me having some fun with that question... trying to keep it light and fun, thanks to the two percent that got that
-Over 87% participants tried to lose weight in 2010
-87.8% also tried to build muscle
-Only 33.70% were successful accomplishing goals... I am floored by that and will do my best to help change that in 2011
-26.8% tried 2 programs to accomplish your goals
-4.10% tried 6 or more programs in an attempt to transform their bodies
-27% were satisfied with their results
-50% were kind of – sort of satisfied with their results... totally unacceptable, I have to do more to help you
-51.10% said Fat Loss is the number one goal for 2011

And I got hundreds and hundreds of great questions that I am personally going to cover as best I can over the next few weeks.

CNN recently exposed the world to the exploits of a college professor [Mark haub], a nutrition professor, nonetheless, who lost 27 pounds through his so-called “Twinkie Diet”. Today is a great day, a bit cold in Canada, but I have to say it is a great day.  The only thing that sucks about today and this past weekend is that I was supposed to be in Las Vegas for a Mastermind gathering for a few days including a visit to the Mr. Olympia with our group.  Really wish I was there, but this project that is coming to fruition is years and years, decades even centuries of research is just now about to become public knowledge and is going to shake the entire weight loss, diet and fitness industry.  Since I am an integral part of the research and nutrition team I had to make a very expensive choice and miss seeing some of the biggest built bodybuilders on the planet and hang out with my fitness buds in Vegas.
Hey I don’t know if you noticed but I said “the biggest built bodies on the planet” not the BEST built bodies on the planet.  Why would I specifically choose to say BIGGEST and not BEST like all the other hype artists out there?

The answer is simple.  Although I love the big bulging muscles and am still a bodybuilding competitor at heart, I feel that not all of these bodies are in perfect ratios and proportion to the rest of their bodies.  This leaves the “athlete” at a less than perfect ratio, certainly NOT the perfect body.

When it comes to nutrition, you have to think small to get big results.  To make sure you accomplish your goals and stay healthy; you have to provide yourself adequate water, not just huge amounts of protein, but also vitamins, minerals and for the body to respond effectively to your training.


The standard bodybuilding diet and get skinny quick diets relying on yams, chicken breasts and a few other staple foods is ideal for getting the macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fat) you need to lose fat and build muscle, but it falls woefully short when it comes to certain micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).  

The fact is that no individual food provided adequate amount of all the micronutrients you need to maximize fat loss, muscle growth, and support recovery and optimal health. Super Sexy Strawberry Smoothie Recipe

First of all why Strawberries?  let me tell you.  Its the fruit of the month and its awesome and packs a powerful punch.

STRAWBERRIES
Nutrition Information
1 serving = 150 g (8 medium)
Very high in Vitamin C (159% Recommended Daily Intake per serving)
Very high in folacin (8% Recommended Daily Intake per serving)
Source of dietary fibre (3.9 g per serving)
Source of potassium (274 mg per serving)
Sodium free (2 mg per serving)

LOOK FOR: Firm, plump berries that are fully red with bright green caps. Strawberries do not ripen once picked.

TO STORE: Arrange unwashed on paper towel in shallow pan. Loosely cover, refrigerate unwashed for up to two days or freeze for up to one year.

TO PREPARE: Gently rinse, pat dry, then remove caps.

Happy Anniversary to My Amazing and Beautiful Wife Terri!

So why 315,532,800... well that is precisely the time we have been married in seconds.  It could very well be the same number of pounds of fat I have helped people lose... I guess we need to start that tally now too. (I have a special gift for you too... click the link at the end of this post).

Here is a weird way to tally how long I have been married and all during the process I have struggled with weight gain, weight loss, muscle gain, muscle loss, the urge to train, bulk up, mountainbike, resume MMA training and even from time to time think longingly for the days back in the royal Canadian Military.  But I wouldn't trade what I have today with Terri and our 3 amazing kids for any of that silly boy stuff...

Well sort of... 
I am back to training, but don't plan on competing in any body building events.
I am flipping tires and doign strong man things, but won't compete again.
I do like to toss the football and skate but won't go semi pro again.. not that I would even make the first round of cuts.
I am mountain biking once again and it feels great... entering into a race series starting next Tuesday.

So I am getting some old habits (only the good and healthy ones), but for the greater good of my personal well being and that of my family.  When I train I am a better person.  I feel better, look better and think better.  I have a better eating habit and supplement more regularly with my multi vitamins and proteins... which by the way enhances your mental outlook and your internals and hormone profiles as well as functions.

I encourage you today to consider doing at least 20 minutes of intense activity 3-5 even 7 days a week.  I walk 20-30 minutes after I take the kids to the school bus in the morning and train or mountain bike 5 days a week.  Its only been a few weeks and I feel great.

So here's a bunch of dumb numbers to say its 10 years later and I am still married and love my wife and kids more today than I did 10 years ago (my oldest is only 6).  Check it out... crazy numbers...

Well I have to say I am more than excited for this day.  I am pretty busy, but I will shut things down later today and do something with my wife and kids, then just my amazing wife (Terri).

Today is the day that celebrates 10 years since we have been married... and to my amazement she still loves me... I hope its more or at least the same as back in the day, after all much has changed, especially me, our lifestyle and the number of people in the house (+3 kids).  WOW!

Okay so Top 10 Foods For Fat Loss, this is not an easy task, there are so many things I want to do and say about foods for fat loss, for now, here we go.


Water (I had a bunch of Transformation Coaching clients tell me “that’s NOT food!”)


Okay fine so water isn’t “food” but it is the most important substance you can take into your body...  Water is 100% essential need to the body, and 100% essential for fat loss. If nothing else remember this the next time you chug down some water. "How do you think that fat leaves the body?" I will give you a hint, it doesn’t just magically disappear into nothing.


Eggs


My next choice is eggs, especially egg whites and omega 3 eggs. You know there is just nothing you can’t do with good old fashioned natural eggs...


Oatmeal


Oatmeal is a personal obsession, it is hard not to put it at one because of my pure love for it but nonetheless here it is, Oatmeal.  A lot of people get very confused about oatmeal, how to cook it, which brand to get...


EFA’s (Essential Fatty Acids)


Next up is EFA’s or essential fatty acids. These are essential.  Yeah I know, not really a food either, or are they?  They come from foods and are natural, so I consider EFA's empowerednutrition...


Berries


Berries. Particularly I would chose wild blueberries, raspberries and cranberries. Some of the best sources of anti-oxidants, fiber, low calories, easy to make anything taste good with and if you buy frozen you can save some cash...


Fish


I am NOT a huge fish fan for taste, but it IS one of the cleanest natrually occuring protein sources on the planet.  I still don't love fish (except fish sticks)...


GREENS


Greens is classified as turnips, spinach, collard, kale, I would even throw in broccoli into that mix. These are the true super foods.  Vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, low calorie, list goes on and on... Find out what I learned from Sam Graci about getting my veggies in...


Protein Powders (YES I know... not really a food... or is it!?)


Now that I gave you my “eat your veggies” talk, let's talk protein.  Specifically, Whey Protein. ...


Sweet Potato


Sweet potatoes deemed the “antidiabetic” food are filled with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and of all starch foods are the easiest to digest. Did I mention they are really yummy?  ...


Butters


Yeah this sounds odd.. BUTTERS?... 



So with this list realize that if you ate nothing but what is on this list that you have a complete balanced diet right here. Complete amino acids, good fats, vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, all right here in these 10 foods. Mix them up even and have real power meals, put the berries in the oatmeal, put the spinach in the omelets, it is endless.  Some people might say “hey you didn’t list this or that”, don’t get me wrong there are definitely some other great foods out there, but as far as I what I feel the average person can easily and should keep in their daily diet, these are my top 10 for today.

Yeah, oddly enough I was not going to talk about nutrition, I was doing some research today on the link between obesity and cancer.  Then in a sidebar I saw this ad and its link.  It was dancing fruit it was cool... it caught my eye.

I clicked on the ad and got to a pretty cool sight.  I think you will agree its pretty cool and provides lots of killer free simple ways to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your life.  If you already have our "Done-For-You Fat Loss Meal Plans" or one of our Personalized Nutrition Programs, then you know we LOVE Fruits and Veggies.

Most people (including lay nutritionists) will avoid fruits like the plague for weight loss, but in reality they are very powerful fat loss tools when combined with the right foods in the right ratios and at the right times.  Eating a fruit rich diet increases long term success of any program.

VARIETY

Eating a serving of fruits and veggies from each colour group is one way to add variety to your diet. Each colour group represents a different combination of nutrients. So, the more colours you can put on your plate, the better.

COLOURS

Fruits and vegetables can be divided into five colour groups: 

[veggie color chart image: Red, Yellow/Orange, Green, Blue/Purple, White/Tan/Brown]

Try to include at least 1 serving from each colour group every day.
Try new fruits and veggies! Choose a variety of colours!

		<description><![CDATA[Today is a great day for fitness, fat loss and fight fans.  Well really Saturday was, but I was without internet access all weekend.

GSP, UFC, Empowered and TACFIT!

I have to say it was a great day as my fellow Canadian Georges St. Pierre won his title defense against Dan Hardy from the UK.

Why is it a great day for Empowered Nutrition?
