Ok so it’s getting close. Already I am feeling overwhelmed and in a love hate relationship with every moment of it. It’s Sick! My body is already starting to panic (and salivate just a little too).
So what is this looming issue that is pressuring me? What is starting to scare me?
It’s my kids!
No seriously it IS the kids… all “hopped” up on sugar and calories. So what is my real problem that is freaking me out?
It’s the holidays!
I have to ask you AND remind myself about the “triple threat” that is looming in the dark scary ends of the last of the belt holes.
Think about this for a minute. What is the triple threat I am talking about?
It’s not cappuccinos, cookies and colas…
It’s the Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
My question is this (and honestly I don’t know the answer) which one is worse for sabotaging your goals?
I just realized it today. Usually I think in terms of the here and now. I think about this specific holiday event and deal with them one on one, like Rocky and the Russian Rule of boxing, Ivan Drago or for you old school fans like me Mr. “T” as Clubber Lang.
Well this year in talking things over I realized just how “amp’d” up my kids are. I have 3 kids all under 5 and we just came off the Canadian Thanksgiving a week later than most due to some family activities and now we are running full speed into Halloween, then bang into the American Thanksgiving (YES I do in fact celebrate that one as I carry my “greencard” at all times and my parents live down in the warm sun of Naples, FL full time) and then BANG we will be hammering right into that wall of feasting we like to call Christmas.
WOW!
It feels like this year is punching me in the face. I have no idea which one is truly worse; I think it changes for each person and family. Is it Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas; or the candy, the cake, the big dinners, the extra spirit consumption or just a little bit too much for too long during this season?
For me I could argue that each of them is equally brutal in terms of keeping the fat trimmed off, but today it’s all about the 1 million calories I am about to uncaringly consume in Halloween candy.
Just look at all those innocent non violent candies just waiting to be consumed, sitting there in that tidy little bowl with all their pretty colors and nice packaging, screaming at me, fighting for the top honors to be the first flavor to hit my taste buds and attack my fat stores with unwaveringly contempt for all my fat loss and lean body lifestyle goals that I have worked so hard to keep. Darn’it… I can’t wait to eat some of those little buggers.
Heck, I could easily eat 2lbs of candy this weekend if I don’t keep an eye on those little demons. To avoid that consider writing it down every time you eat one. Or fire up a notch on the fridge so everyone can see your success and help hold you accountable to your meal plan.
Hey worse or not, who cares, today it is all about the Halloween. My kids have a “thing” to go to this evening and tomorrow another, then finally on Saturday they will be crushing the candies alongside their dear old dad, like there is no tomorrow.
Well OK maybe I will keep that in check and we won’t consume too much, but it is amazing just how many calories we consume by “accident” on Halloween and over the other holidays.
Think about this. The average mini candy bar is 90 calories. WOW that is crazy, 90 calories in that cute little delicious candy bar… no way. Hey before you look for a healthy alternative (this one is more for the Canadians) a Tim Horton’s Glazed Sour Cream Timbit (more commonly known to southerners as doughnut holes ) has just over 90 calories and is just 1 bite small.
So back to my question. Of the triple threat which one is the deadliest to the waistlines of North America?
Which one is your biggest threat to achieving your lean body before the New Years Celebrations and Resolutions?
Is it…
- Halloween
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
Or is it the culmination of the “triple threat”
Man I am sure that each one has its argument and is both good and bad, but the culmination of the “triple threat” is just dubiously evil like Han Solo on a crash course with revenge of Jaba the Hut. Which if I don’t watch myself this season I am sure to look like.
Just for a minute let’s play the game.. It’s kind of like that shell game on the streets of New York. You go down some shady alley in pursuit of some action as you see a group of people screaming and hooting and hollering around the table having a great time.
You wander in closer without being alerted to anything wrong. You get closer and closer to the table, you then get sucked in and are pressed tightly against the table, while one man orchestrates the rules of engagement around his table. He clearly notes that neither before nor after and at no time in between will anyone be allowed to touch the merchandise as if it were some mythical and mysterious creature.
Now he works his way around the table to see who’s interested in what he is offering from his plate of goodies. Finally it comes to you… it’s your turn, you embrace your chance to get caught up in the feeding frenzy brought on by the vultures at the table. If you don’t get your fix now you may never get a chance to get it again. You better get as much as you can now or it is lost forever.
You dive in, grab at the goods and check it out. Eyeballing the stuff as it hits the table once more.
The shells start to move around, you keep your eye on the one you want, the one that has all the goodness sitting inside waiting for it to come around and stop again and waiting for your chance to POUNCE on it with the precision of a patient panther.
The mythical beast is back… NOW! You jump on it. You claim your prize only to find it is… its… its… completely empty, leaving you wanting for more. You are standing there needing another hit, another fix, just one more chance to get just one more taste of sweetness. Or maybe sweet revenge.
Now let’s think about that. It can work so many ways. I am sure you already thought about the feeding frenzy; that was a bit too obvious around the table.
But did you think the man running the game as your local candy man during Halloween or maybe dad or mom running the dinner table at thanksgiving or Christmas?
How about that magical mythical beast? Were you thinking it was Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas?
Maybe the mythical beast was your favourite Halloween candy, Thanksgiving Food or Christmas Desert.
Hey regardless, they all come up empty shells. Most of our Holidays are laden with empty calories, just sitting and waiting to sabotage our fat loss success.
I mean really what is the worst offender in your mind. What makes you cringe with fat storing fear?
I really think this need to be compared closely, but for now I will let you work on a game plan to keep the “triple threat” to your fat loss goals at bay.
As for tonight, I am getting ready to monitor 3 crazy kids doing some candy scarfing and do my best to control the sugar input they get this weekend, maybe watch my insulin levels a bit too just to be safe I added in a STOP day today to kick off some added fat limiting tricks to my treats, while i really watch my intake and stick to my meal plans for the rest of the week.
Let me share a little secret with you to avoid the binging and over indulgence. Every time you have a craving or are getting ready for a feast this holiday season, I want you to consider having a big glass of water or a protein shake with a multi vitamin about 20-30 minutes before your event or if its mid craving and too late to plan ahead, stop eating the junk, drink a big glass of water, pop the multi and wait 20 minutes. There is a good chance that your cravings will be gone.
WHY? Well its simple, the body is often times craving what it is lacking, not always sugar which we often times confuse with hunger and lack of energy. Once you satiate the brain and nourish it with the nutrients it is craving the cravings for sweets and treats will be gone. The big glass of water will satisfy the gut reaction and fill the void while the multi vitamin does its magic.
I have used that technique more often then I like to admit. But that’s another story for a post insulin shock evening while struggling to get back on my game with my mealplan.
Everyone falls off the “wagon” but remember if you have a good game plan and part of your battle plan is to follow a strategy and nourish the body with an intelligent meal plan, then you are only off the game plan for a quick break. You are only off until the next meal when you can get back on your meal plan. Face it, the good you do now following your mealplan far outweighs the bad you will do at a handful of the “triple threat” feastings that will occur.
Speaking of meal plans, eating a clean game plan is pretty darn important if you want to cheat you way thru the next 3 months of feasts. Consider this my battle cry against the “triple threat”; if you don’t already have a game plan I want to offer you my Done-For-You Fast Fat Loss Meal Plans as your battle plan against the bulge.

OK so off to avoid some candy and if I must, just have a protein shake and a multi vitamin to ward off the serious binge attacks on the kids candy bags.
What’s your opinion on the worst saboteur to your fat loss and what is your secret to staying on your game plan during the “triple threat” holiday season?
Have an amazing Halloween and keep a tight belt on to remind you to stop eating all the kids candies.
Patrick.
P.S. I just noticed that I forgot to tell you about another great snack I like to use on Halloween evening. Protein bars. I keep them kicking around the house and I have to be honest, I just found a new one I like. Not to brand name drop, but Kashi GoLean Rolls.
